“Discussions are in full swing regarding the renewal of the national movement, our parliamentary group, and the protection of our communities,” said Viktor Orbán in a video posted to his social media page.
“We need the opinions, experiences, and willingness to act of every member of our community,” said the prime minister. “We have also made some important decisions: we are radically restructuring our parliamentary faction. The faction will be formed on Monday. Its leader will be Gergely Gulyás,” announced Viktor Orbán. He then stated:
The parliamentary seat I won as the Fidesz-KDNP list leader is, in fact, a parliamentary seat for Fidesz, which is why I have decided to give it back.”
“We need me now not in Parliament, but in the reorganization of the national movement,” he added.
The outgoing prime minister also announced that a national council meeting will be held next week, and the leadership election congress, originally scheduled for the fall, will be moved up to June. “I have led our community for nearly four decades; during this time, we have experienced successes and failures, electoral victories and defeats,” Viktor Orbán recalled. He then emphasized:
“One thing, however, has not changed: this camp has always been Hungary’s most united and cohesive political community, and Hungary will continue to have a great need for this unity.”
The presidency recommends that I continue my work as president of Fidesz, and if the congress honors me with its trust, I am ready for the task,”
he declared.
Early Saturday afternoon, the outgoing prime minister announced in a cryptic post on his social media page that he would soon speak about renewal and the future.
Viktor Orbán believes that massive transformations and renewal are necessary. The outgoing prime minister also pointed out that when the candidate list was drawn up, they had expected an election victory, but now that is no longer the task at hand, thus the parliamentary group must also be reconstituted. This work has begun — the outgoing prime minister stated, adding that for him, this community is not a political choice, but his life.
