Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has shed new light on the results of the April 12 election. He also stated that an important event lies ahead for Fidesz.
Early Monday evening, Viktor Orbán posted a video message on his social media pages. This was his first public appearance since late Sunday evening, when he announced Fidesz–KDNP’s election defeat.
In his brief statement, the outgoing Prime Minister addressed the events of the previous day and also spoke about the future of Fidesz. As things stand, the long-standing governing parties have won 56 seats in the 199-member parliament, while TISZA has 136. The “Mi Hazánk” (Our Homeland) party has secured six seats. The vote count is 98.93 percent complete.
From Fidesz’s perspective, this is a slightly more favorable situation, as the previous tally stood at 138 to 54. However, to break TISZA’s two-thirds majority, Viktor Orbán’s party would need to win four more seats.
There are opportunities for new seats both on the party list and in individual constituencies, as the race is extremely close in certain districts. The votes of overseas voters and swing voters are still pending, and the counting of absentee ballots is also still underway.
The final election results are expected on Saturday;
however, it seems unlikely that TISZA’s two-thirds majority will be prevented.

In a video that Viktor Orbán posted on both Facebook and X, he stated the following:
“Dear compatriots! It has become clear today that more than 2.25 million voters supported the Fidesz–KDNP list and candidates in yesterday’s election. That is how large the national movement, our political community, has become in Hungary today. A heartfelt thank you to all our supporters.”
In 2014, with the support of the same number of voters, we achieved an overwhelming election victory; yesterday, this was only enough for an honorable performance and a defeat.
But the voters of the national side can always count on us. Fidesz is Hungary’s most united political community. We have served the Hungarian people faithfully for decades. And we will continue to do so in the years to come.
“Our plan is to defend the achievements of the national side together with our voters. In the coming weeks, we will reorganize, we will go to every constituency, we will rally our volunteers, activists, MPs, and candidates,” said the chairman of Fidesz, announcing a nationwide committee meeting on April 28.
“The work has begun today. Let’s go, Hungary, let’s go, Hungary!” Viktor Orbán concluded his message.
