The high turnout in the Hungarian elections is in itself a victory for democracy, Czech President Petr Pavel told reporters late Sunday evening at Prague Airport before departing for Argentina and Chile. The president declined to comment on the detailed election results, which show the opposition Tisza Party leading by a wide margin. He did, however, express hope that Hungary’s relations with the Czech Republic and its allies would improve after the elections.

An election is always a very tense situation, but afterward comes the sobering reality and the real work, which cannot wait. There is a great deal of work ahead not only for Hungary but for all of us, whether it concerns the European Union or NATO,” stated the Czech president, who in his statement praised the fact that Hungarians were very active in the election.
