Péter Magyar announced on Friday that he had nominated Dávid Vitézy, a man he designated in the past as “without leadership qualities”, as Minister of Transport and Public Works. He will replace János Lázár, a FIDESZ veteran in the job.
Vitézy is considered a competent transport specialist, albeit somewhat fluid in his political loyalties. He has briefly served as a state secretary in the fifth Orbán government in 2022, then in 2024 he ran for the office of mayor of Budapest under a joint platform with the Greens (LMP), but also endorsed by FIDESZ. Now he will continue to serve as a TISZA party minister.
As far as his professional background, Vitézy’s choice as a transport minister should not come as a surprise, but some commenters have doubted that this should come to fruition considering Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar’s past comments on his account:
David Vitézy is a Fidesz hack; everyone knows he belongs to them — he was even their state secretary. He may know the BKK (Budapest Transport Center) timetable by heart, but I do not see in him the leadership qualities with which he could hold together even a Fidesz-majority assembly that has been reinforced with oligarchs and party loyalists. In such an environment, it is hard to imagine him having the level of independence and strength needed to actually push through his transport policy ideas”,
described Péter Magyar Vitézy in an earlier speech.
Even Vitézy’s former rival in the race for the capital’s top job, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony described Vitézy’s former endorsement by FIDESZ, clearly with an amount of political posturing, saying – “a dark and cynical political deal has been struck. Dávid Vitézy is the candidate of Fidesz, the NER (System of National Cooperation), and those in power”, said the capital’s mayor.
