Passengers planning to use Debrecen International Airport in early May should expect restrictions. Due to preventive maintenance work on the runway, the airport will be completely closed for several days.
Air traffic will be completely suspended from May 4, 2026 (1:45 p.m.) until May 8 (7:00 a.m.). During this period, neither takeoffs nor landings will be possible. The reason for the measure is “preventive maintenance of the runway.”
The goal of the work is to ensure the long-term stability of the infrastructure.
Experts will conduct a thorough inspection of the runway and carry out the necessary repairs directly on-site. “The safety of our passengers is our top priority,” emphasized the airport management in its statement.
The decision to carry out preventive maintenance is no coincidence, writes airportal.hu. As early as the summer of 2024, extreme heat waves caused damage to the runway’s asphalt, which temporarily disrupted flight operations at the time. To avoid such unforeseen disruptions during the upcoming peak season, the operator is now implementing targeted preventive measures. A similar closure was successfully carried out last June.
Despite the complete closure of the airspace over Debrecen (southern Hungary), the operator says the inconvenience to passengers will be minimal.
The maintenance period was deliberately scheduled to have minimal impact on the regular flight schedule; the four-day closure affects a total of four scheduled flights.
The affected airlines and partners were notified in advance so that passengers could be offered rebooking or alternative travel routes early on.
With this step, Debrecen Airport underscores its commitment to remaining a reliable and safe hub for the region. Once the work is completed, on the morning of May 8, operations are expected to resume smoothly and at the highest technical standards. The airport would like to thank all passengers in advance for their understanding and patience during this necessary maintenance period.
