Balázs Orbán
In the long run, it pays to remain sovereign, peaceful and free, to say no to preparations for war; this is the “Hungarian path,” said the prime minister’s political director in Mandiner’s online program Reakció, published on Saturday.
Summing up the year 2025, Balázs Orbán said that there had been changes on the world political stage this year, with the election of a new, peace-loving president in the United States who thinks similarly to the Hungarian right wing on many social and economic issues. However, the European elite jumped on the “war train” and shifted into high gear, that is why the people of Europe were the losers of 2025.
Hungary did not board this train, and the voices of those who are trying to stop Europe’s suicide are growing stronger, as they do not believe that war policy, conscription, austerity measures, tax increases, and indebtedness are a desirable future for Europeans,
he said.
He explained that the Hungarian government was able to show something new with the welfare measures it introduced, that is good for Hungary as a whole. He added that this is also a good “blueprint” because if Hungary was able to win 2025, then Fidesz-KDNP will also be able to win 2026 in a political sense.
In Balázs Orbán’s view, two issues dominated international and domestic public discourse: on the one hand, the blockade of the European economy due to the war, and, on the other hand, whether Hungary had chosen the right direction for itself over the past fifteen years by saying no to illegal immigration, settling on family support, building a work-based society, and involving multinational companies and large foreign-owned companies in public burden-sharing.
The really important question is, what will happen to Europe and Hungary within it, over the next ten years — specifically how we will ensure that there is peace and security in Hungary and that opportunities for economic development continue to exist, said the Prime Minister’s political director, adding that regardless of party affiliation, everyone is currently concerned about this.
He emphasized that
there are two paths: one is the “Brussels path,” involving raising money to prepare for war against Russia and giving the money to Ukraine, and the other is the “Hungarian path,” saying no to all this war preparation.
If we can say no to a European-Russian war, then a path will open up for Hungary in which we do not risk our own peace and security and do not give our own resources to others’ wars, Balázs Orbán said.
In the long run, it pays to remain sovereign, peaceful, and free. The past few months have proven that this path exists, Balázs Orbán said, referring to the prime minister’s earlier statements.
We are dissatisfied with the European elite and would like to see a change of elite in Europe. Until we achieve this, we must ensure Hungary’s peace and security, and the available EU funds must be used for good purposes, said the political director.
In the interview, Balázs Orbán said that Péter Magyar (leader of the largest opposition TISZA Party) is “the most dangerous left-wing politician in a long time,” even though his voters do not really like him.
His politics are based on lying to Hungarians and trying to persuade them not to concern themselves with issues relating to the future of Europe and war, he said.
He added that “the current situation is extremely dangerous and volatile, and in this situation, entrusting any responsibility to such a confused, essentially useless figure is not a worthwhile endeavor.”
Referring to the Anti-War Rallies, the Prime Minister’s political director said that they have an extraordinary unifying and galvanizing power and are a very good example of the power of social solidarity.
These events are hugely significant because they show that ordinary people in Hungary also take social responsibility and stand up for what they believe in, he said.
In the program, Balázs Orbán emphasized that Hungary must support the policies represented by Donald Trump in relation to peace efforts.
