In defense of persecuted Christian communities, the United States carried out nighttime airstrikes against ISIS terrorist positions in Sokoto State, northern Nigeria last week. Responding to the events, Hungary’s State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians wrote on social media that the government has been supporting these communities with humanitarian aid since 2019, providing targeted, life-saving assistance to those persecuted for their faith for the first time in the world.
As part of the Hungary Helps program, the government supports the Catholic Church’s life-saving institutions and the reconstruction of its schools in areas where extremists particularly often target Christian children, State Secretary Tristan Azbej noted.
The state secretary recalled that in April, after lengthy security preparations, he led a humanitarian mission to Sokoto to personally assess the situation of the communities living there and the possibilities for further assistance. He met with Christian and Muslim church leaders and representatives of local authorities on the ground and witnessed the gravity of the situation firsthand.

Although, as he said, moderate Muslim leaders are striving for peaceful coexistence, during his visit he saw Christian churches and institutions that had been attacked and set on fire, and met with internally displaced persons and grieving families.
Even in these circumstances, the Church helps those in need regardless of their religious affiliation and is grateful for Hungary’s support, that alleviates suffering and helps people remain in their homeland, he added.
Current events clearly show that the protection of Christian communities has once again become an important element of international political thinking,
emphasized Tristan Azbej.
Hungary remains consistent in this regard: “We bring help where there is trouble,” he said.
