The Hungarian election is important for both Hungarians and Europeans who believe in peace and independence, said Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the right-wing governing party, Lega (League), at a meeting with the foreign press in Rome on Wednesday.
In response to a question from Trisha Thomas, president of the Foreign Correspondents’ Association, who asked for his assessment of J.D. Vance’s visit to Budapest, Matteo Salvini said that the U.S. Vice President’s participation did not surprise him.
He believed that the Hungarian elections are about two different visions of Europe:
- one advocates a highly bureaucratic Europe, while the other calls for greater autonomy, greater freedom, and greater independence.
- The latter “wants to be less dependent on the whims and ideology of Brussels,” he declared.
He explained that he stood alongside Viktor Orbán at the first patriotic rally in Budapest on March 23, which is why it is no secret that he is confident in the Hungarian prime minister’s re-election. He added that he considers Viktor Orbán a great political leader whom both Europe and Hungary need.
He called PM Orbán courageous, noting that “courage is a rarity among European chancellors these days.”
Matteo Salvini cited the Hungarian prime minister’s policies as an example in opposition to the economic stability pact, which he described as a “straightjacket” imposed by the European Union.
The Italian politician called the European Stability Pact a “pact of stupidity” and urged its revision. He called it unacceptable that, in the face of rising energy prices, Brussels is recommending that people walk: “I do not see teleworking or the closure of factories, offices, shops, and schools as a solution, and with the summer season approaching and the rise in aviation fuel prices, Brussels must yield, as Italy and other countries have requested, so that member states can help those in need” the Italian politician said.
As for Rome’s imports of Russian natural gas, Matteo Salvini believed that this could be discussed after the war ends.
