“The U.S. president and vice president understand and accept Hungary’s history, circumstances, and perspectives,” said Zoltán Kovács, State Secretary for International Communication, on the M1 news channel Wednesday morning, during U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance’s two-day visit to Budapest.
Zoltán Kovács pointed out that Hungarian-American relations are based on mutual respect and shared values; neither side tries to dictate to the other what it should do, as Brussels does. Hungary has earned respect by demonstrating that it is possible to pursue different policies, for example, in the areas of migration, families, or energy security.
The message of J. D. Vance’s visit is not only—and perhaps not primarily—directed at Hungary, but at all of Europe.
The vice president already warned at last year’s Munich Security Conference that Europe is destroying its own identity and culture.
Regarding the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and J. D. Vance on Tuesday, Zoltán Kovács highlighted that
U.S. investments provide jobs for around 100,000 people across hundreds of companies, and that Hungarian-American economic relations increasingly feature strategic, high-innovation content, such as in the field of space exploration.
Speaking about energy policy, the State Secretary explained that Hungary is interested in diversification, and there are opportunities in this area as well within Hungarian-American economic relations. At the same time, the solution lies in Russian energy; denying this contradicts the energy security of all of Europe.
Hungary cooperates in all directions to ensure the country’s energy security,”
he added.

Zoltán Kovács drew attention to the stark contrast between the American approach, which acknowledges Hungary’s achievements, and the approaches taken by Brussels or Ukraine, which, on the other hand, seek to impose a political agenda on us and dictate who we should be.
The state secretary emphasized that U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance’s visit is of historic significance—there has not been a visit like it in two decades.
“Hungarian-American cooperation goes beyond bilateral relations; it is values-based and founded on respect. For example, it respects people’s everyday decisions regarding energy, which fundamentally differs from the progressive, liberal policies of Brussels, which seek to change people’s minds through interventionist measures,” explained Zoltán Kovács.
