On Christmas Eve, precipitation is expected in many parts of the country due to a Mediterranean cyclone arriving on Tuesday. From Tuesday afternoon, the weather will become rainier in the western parts of the country, and then on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, the rain will be replaced by sleet and snow in many parts of the western and southwestern Transdanubia region.
The weather is about to change, as an anticyclone has formed over Scandinavia, with cold, frosty air moving towards central and western Europe on its southern and southeastern edges. Meanwhile, a Mediterranean cyclone is deepening over the central Mediterranean basin, mixing this cold, frosty air mass with the mild, humid air coming from the south, writes Idokep.hu.
The cyclone’s precipitation zone will arrive this afternoon with rain, but it will not affect the entire country: significant precipitation is expected in the south and in the Transdanubia region. However, the wind will pick up across the country as it turns to the northeast.
On Wednesday, the rain in the western and southwestern parts of Transdanubia may be replaced by sleet and snow in many places.
Based on current calculations, snowfall can be expected mainly in the higher-lying areas, such as Bakony, Mecsek, and Alpokalja.
In the west and southwest, there is also a chance of solid precipitation in the lowlands.

The falling snow will melt at first, but later, as the temperature drops, it may remain in many places, so that by Christmas Eve, a few centimeters of snow may cover the landscape. The greatest chance of this is in the west.
The national meteorological service, HungaroMet, also predicts that on Wednesday, the sky will be heavily cloudy across most of the country, with only the northeast seeing some sunshine. With the exception of the northeastern regions, most areas should be prepared for precipitation on Christmas Eve, with snow and sleet possible in the west, they note. The highest daytime temperatures will range between 1 and 7 degrees Celsius.
