L-R: Viktor Orbán and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisit in Cairo on November 2
Giant business deals may have been reached as Hungary’s most influential businessmen appeared in Egypt alongside Viktor Orbán during the weekend.
The head of government held talks with the President in the Egyptian capital, and the composition of the delegation suggests that business and strategic agreements were also on the agenda.
The Hungarian delegation consisted of: Marcell Biró, the Prime Minister’s Chief National Security Advisor, Miklós Maróth, member of the Prime Minister’s Strategic Advisory Board, Prime Minister’s Commissioner, János Máté, State Secretary heading the Prime Minister’s Office and, last but not least, Gellért Jászai, President of 4iG.
The most interesting thing was that Gellért Jászai, president of 4iG one of Hungary’s most influential businessmen was also present at the meeting. At the same time is not at all difficult to answer why it was important for him to accompany the Hungarian Prime Minister. Back in April, Világgazdaság reported that 4iG had won a huge contract in Egypt.
An agreement was reached that Hungary’s largest telecommunications company, 4iG, would build the optical cable system connecting Egypt with Europe. This 2,800-kilometer-long undersea cable will provide high-speed digital and internet connectivity between Europe and Egypt.
In addition, Hungarian technology will also be used to build the optical network that will bring the internet to another 6 million Egyptian households. However, this is not 4iG’s first project in Egypt: in the summer of 2024, it was reported that Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s market-leading telecommunications provider, and the 4iG group had signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture to build and operate a wholesale optical access infrastructure in the North African country.

The latest development is only a few weeks old. At the EU-Western Balkans Investment Forum, the European Commission, GÉANT, and the 4iG Group signed a joint statement. In it, the parties confirmed that they would work together on the digital development of the Western Balkans, with a particular focus on secure, high-capacity data connections.
In the document, they pledged their support for the EAGLE (Egypt–Albania Gateway Link to Europe) submarine data cable project, which connects Albania with Egypt, and for the development of a regional terrestrial backbone network.
The speculation of a new business agreement started after, it was announced on Friday that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán would visit Egypt on Saturday at the invitation of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. First, he attended the grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, but on Sunday, the second day of his two-day visit, the Hungarian prime minister also held bilateral talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisit.
There is no information about the precise outcome of the talks yet, with the Hungarian news agency only stating in the caption of the photo released by the Prime Minister’s Communication Department that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was received by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo on November 2, 2025.
