This year, the public media charity campaign It’s Good to be Good! is supporting sick, orphaned, and homeless children living in war-torn Transcarpathia by helping KEGYES, the Charity Foundation for Helping “Forgotten” Children in Transcarpathia.
“This year marks the 15th edition of It’s Good to Be Good!, through which we have been able to support those in need with a total of nearly 3 billion forints (7.7 million euros) so far. There are few public service media outlets in the world that are able to organize charity campaigns so effectively and on such a large scale,” said Anita Altorjai, CEO of Duna Media Services, at a press event on Thursday at Bethesda Children’s Hospital.
As she noted, It’s Good to Be Good! is a genuine, noble public service task and an important example of social responsibility. “Through exemplary cooperation, a real brand was born,” she said.
Anita Altorjai also mentioned that the It’s Good to Be Good! campaign has mainly focused on children in recent years, and this is still the case this year. She recalled that when the war broke out in Ukraine in 2022, the public media organized an all-day campaign to support those in need in Transcarpathia:
Now we are asking for the same thing, to pay attention to the victims of war, the terrible tragedies, and the consequences.”
“The KEGYES Foundation supports children who are left in hospital by their parents for various reasons. The foundation mostly buys medicines, baby food, and toys, and it is very important that we also hold the hands of these little ones,” said Anita Altorjai.
As part of the campaign, there will be a full day of programming on public media channels on December 21. The donation line is already active: you can support the KEGYES Foundation with 500 forints (1,29 euros) by calling 1358 or sending an SMS.
Beatrix Siklósi, project manager of It’s Good to Be Good! and channel director at Kossuth Radio, emphasized that the goal of the campaign each year is to awaken compassion, love, humility, and selflessness in people’s hearts. By joining forces, we can provide real help to children in need.
“In our everyday lives, it is difficult to imagine what it is like to live in a country ravaged by war, what life is like for a child there. That is why we decided that this should be the cause we support this year,” added Beatrix Siklósi.
József Sipos, head of KEGYES, said that their foundation has been operating since 2017 and that their activities have taken on even greater responsibility since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
We are a small foundation, but we can say that we are able to bring good into many people’s lives. There are many success stories, such as adoptions, which we have been able to support, but at the same time, we also have to deal with sad deaths,” said József Sipos.
He added that their dream is that when the war ends, they will be able to create a shelter where vulnerable mothers can start their lives anew and offer a helping hand to families raising children with disabilities.
György Velkey, director general of Bethesda Children’s Hospital, spoke at the event about how this year they have already admitted more than 500 children injured during the war from Transcarpathia and other parts of Ukraine to their institution. “Not only do we treat their illnesses, but we also provide full accommodation and living conditions for the families concerned.”
