In an interview with Mandiner, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán revealed that the next meeting between him and Donald Trump is imminent. The date has already been set and will be made public as soon as an agreement has been reached with the Americans on the topics to be discussed.
In the interview, the Prime Minister said about the peace summit in Egypt that although it was known that the American President would be visiting the Egyptian Parliament, the fact that such a world summit would take place was very surprising, even to the other heads of state and government.
As he said, these are complex and long-standing disputes, and in his view, strong nerves, perseverance, clear objectives, persistence, and humility were needed to achieve this result. “Because if you get upset that one party to the negotiations changes its mind for the sixteenth time and goes home, you will never reach an agreement. (…) This success also required humility on the part of the American president, and Donald Trump is not generally known for his humility in the eyes of the world.
But I, who have witnessed all this at close quarters, can say that this agreement would not have been possible without the humility of the Americans in the service of the cause,”
Viktor Orbán emphasized.

When asked by the Mandiner editor-in-chief what role Hungary had played in the peace summit, the Prime Minister explained that since President Trump’s return, a global network of heads of state and government had formed that seeks peaceful solutions to every armed conflict.
These people gather around President Trump; that is where the power lies, that is where the ability lies, and Hungary is part of this network,”
he explained, adding that this is not limited to Europe or even the Western world. “There is a network, and we know who the now nearly dozen world leaders are who support each other on peace issues and, above all, help the Americans,” he emphasized.
In the interview, Viktor Orbán made it clear that Hungary would never push itself forward, saying, “We know our place. We did not apply for this.” “We know how big our country is, how great its influence is, what capabilities we have. But when it comes to the cause of peace and we are needed, then you can count on us,” he emphasized.
Responding to the interviewer’s remark that Ursula von der Leyen was conspicuously absent from the peace summit, the Prime Minister replied: “Ursula von der Leyen is an employee of the EU member states. She was not absent there. We (the member states – editor’s note) represented her.”

When asked whether there would be another meeting between the US President and PM Orbán, he replied that this would be the case, and soon.
The date had already been set and 80 percent of the topics for discussion had been determined.
As soon as the remaining 20 percent had been agreed upon, the date would be announced.”
As it turned out, the 80 percent that had already been agreed upon mainly concerned economic issues. When asked, Viktor Orbán replied that one of the biggest “points of contention” would be the agreement between the US and Hungary to avoid double taxation. “The conclusion of an agreement, which we are now demanding and for which we have put forward numerous arguments, is currently at odds with American customs and trade policy. Thus I do not have an easy task,” he emphasized.
The Prime Minister recalled at this point that the visa issue had already been resolved, political relations had been put in order, and eight major American investments had been made. Looking to the future, he revealed that three to four more American investments would be coming to Hungary this year and expressed optimism about the negotiations.

Another unavoidable topic was the war between Russia and Ukraine. Regarding the conflict, that has been going on for years, the Prime Minister stated that he had a “very clear” opinion on the matter. “As far as the war between Ukraine and Russia is concerned,
President Trump would have made peace long ago if the Europeans were not constantly inciting Zelenskyy behind the scenes,”
Viktor Orbán emphasized, making it clear: “The European heads of state and government want to continue the war. They explicitly advocate a belligerent stance, they have a war strategy, they have a war plan, they talk openly about it, and they are working to pull President Trump from the side of peace to the side of continuing the war. If there were Western unity, peace would already reign on the Ukrainian-Russian front,” said the head of government.
He went on to say that the Americans have pulled out of the Ukrainian-Russian war and are not giving a cent. Meanwhile, we Europeans are either sending our money directly to Ukraine or buying American weapons and sending them there, he added.
Towards the end of the interview, the EU accession process for Ukraine, which is being pushed and accelerated by Brussels, was also discussed. Viktor Orbán said in connection with the desired change in the legal system, which would bypass Hungary, that the Hungarian people had clearly expressed their opinion in a referendum not long ago: they did not want to belong to an integration framework with Ukraine, either in the European Union or in NATO.
In connection with the fact that the next EU summit begins on October 23, PM Orbán emphasized: “I have been telling them for years that they should not schedule the meeting on the national holiday, but they are not changing anything to accommodate us.” Important issues will be on the agenda at the meeting: the freezing of assets of Russians living in Europe and the abolition of the unanimity rule in accession negotiations.
The EU summit will begin before the Hungarian Prime Minister can arrive, as Viktor Orbán will be giving a speech at the Peace March in Budapest on that day. “I will therefore be forced to convey Hungary’s position on these issues in writing.
During the debate, we will probably ask the Slovaks, President Fico, to continuously represent Hungary’s position until my arrival,”
the Prime Minister noted.
