President Sulyok at the statue of Károly Szladits
During his private visit to southern Slovakia, Felvidék (historical Hungarian territory with significant Hungarian community) on Wednesday, President Tamás Sulyok traveled to Komárno (Révkomárom) and Dunajská Streda (Dunaszerdahely).
At the Zichy Palace in Komárno, the president and his wife viewed the permanent exhibition dedicated to Hungarian novelist Mór Jókai and the temporary exhibition opened on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth. The president then laid flowers at the statue of Mór Jókai.
The head of state wrote in a social media post: “Born 200 years ago, Mór Jókai was not only one of the greatest figures in Hungarian literature, but also an important player and shaper of 19th-century Hungarian history.
We are grateful for his steadfastness during the revolution and war of independence of 1848–49 and for his rich literary oeuvre, comprising hundreds of volumes. I paid my respects to his memory on behalf of our nation in his hometown of Komárno.”
The head of state also visited the renovated St. Andrew’s Basilica. Built in Baroque style between 1768 and 1771, the church was granted the status of basilica minor in 2018. During his short visit to Komárno, the Hungarian President also held talks with representatives of local institutions and civil organizations.
Later in the day, he visited the town of Dunajská Streda. Here, the president laid a wreath at the statue of lawyer Károly Szladits. Szladits, who was born in Dunajská Streda, was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and his outstanding scientific achievement was the collection entitled “Hungarian Private Law” (“Magyar magánjog”).
