The Hungarian government welcomed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. “The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving people of the world. We are ready!” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on social media on Thursday evening.
The Hungarian Prime Minister expressed his delight at the news on his Facebook page too, writing: “Another great opportunity for peace. And it is only Thursday!”

In another post, he wrote: “This week marks a major boost for the network of pro-peace leaders. On Monday, a conflict once thought impossible to resolve took a step toward peace with the signing of the Middle East Peace Plan. Then last night, more fantastic news arrived: American-Russian talks — and they are taking place in Budapest.
Yesterday’s announcement proves that it is worth standing by good causes all the way. For three years, we have been advocating for negotiations, diplomacy, and peace. We have taken a lot of heat for it — but in the end, God always sets things right.”
The head of government added: “The most important thing now is for peace to finally come. One thing is for sure: it will not be the fault of us Hungarians if it does not. Let us get to work!”
That evening, it was also revealed that Viktor Orbán had already spoken with Donald Trump by phone to coordinate the preparations.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called it fantastic news that the leaders of the two superpowers had spoken on the phone, “and even more fantastic that they will soon meet in Budapest.” “The road to peace leads through negotiations. War cannot be solved on the battlefield,” he added.

Fidesz MEP András László drew attention in a post on X to the reaction of Péter Magyar, president of the Hungarian opposition TISZA party and member of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament. After President Trump announced that he had agreed with President Putin to meet in Hungary to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, the chairman of the TISZA party claimed that it had been his idea for the two top politicians to meet in Hungary. “Everyone is laughing at Péter Magyar in Hungary,” wrote the Fidesz MEP.

The upcoming “summit of superpowers” in Budapest is a major win for Viktor Orbán but a significant embarrassment for the EU,
according to The Telegraph. The article notes that choosing Hungary as the summit’s host is a blow to the EU, which has already been largely excluded from Ukraine peace negotiations and sidelined in efforts to resolve the Gaza conflict.
