Under an intergovernmental agreement focused on civilian nuclear energy, the United States is supporting the preparation of a feasibility study to facilitate the deployment of new, U.S.-manufactured small modular reactors (SMRs) in Hungary, securing Hungary’s role as a key partner in European energy security. The study lays the groundwork for Hungary to purchase up to 10 U.S. SMRs, worth up to $20 billion.
The U.S. company Westinghouse and MVM have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore how Westinghouse’s technology can be used to extend the operating life of Units 1 and 2 at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. This agreement also covers cooperation in the field of SMR technology. The agreement builds on the November 2025 contract for the supply of nuclear fuel.
