Although the explosives were allegedly identified as of “U.S. origin“, it remains unclear who was behind the sabotage attempts targeting the TurkStream gas pipeline, with Serbian authorities still investigating. Speaking at an extraordinary press conference on Monday, the Hungarian Prime Minister said the incidents fit into a broader pattern of similar events, adding that Ukraine possesses both the capability and the willingness to carry out such operations. His remarks came after personally inspecting the newly reinforced military security measures along the Hungarian section of the pipeline near Kiskundorozsma.
As Viktor Orbán announced in a post on X on Sunday, Serbian authorities had discovered an explosive device, along with the equipment necessary to detonate it, at a key gas infrastructure facility connecting Serbia and Hungary. An emergency meeting of the Defense Council was subsequently convened.

At the meeting, enhanced military surveillance and protection of the Hungarian section of the TurkStream gas pipeline were ordered,
the Prime Minister announced in a video message on X.
As he explained, according to available information, an act of sabotage had been prepared on the section of the “TurkStream” gas pipeline in Vojvodina that supplies Hungary. He had consulted with the Serbian President who informed him that there were no injuries and that the gas pipeline was operating without disruption. He emphasized that he had thanked President Aleksandar Vučić for the work of the Serbian authorities.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the operation of this pipeline is vital for Hungary, as it covers 60 percent of Hungary’s gas consumption. He announced that, for this reason, increased military surveillance and protection of the Hungarian section of the pipeline had been ordered.
The Serbian authorities are investigating, and the Hungarian authorities are in constant contact with them,”
Viktor Orbán emphasized.
The head of government also noted that an unprecedented energy crisis is looming over Europe. European countries are dependent on energy from Russia and will need it even more, he added.
Europe is heading into an energy crisis. This is no time for political theatre. It is time to lift sanctions and secure energy, from anywhere. Our nation’s energy security comes first. pic.twitter.com/fP82Q0nfiL

After the Prime Minister personally inspected the enhanced military protection of the Hungarian section of the TurkStream gas pipeline near Kiskundorozsma on Monday, he stated at an extraordinary press conference that energy security was no game, and therefore neither was the discussion surrounding it; consequently, only verified facts should be cited.
We Hungarians cannot say exactly who planned the acts of sabotage,”
he stated, referring to the ongoing investigations by Serbian authorities. He continued that he did not wish to further strain Ukrainian-Hungarian relations by accusing Ukraine without knowing the facts, hence they would wait for the conclusion of the investigations.
Viktor Orbán, however, believed that what is currently unfolding fits into the Ukrainians’ strategy to cut off all of Europe from Russian energy. The Ukrainians have the capability to do so and are both willing and able to carry out such actions, he said, referring to the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
He stated that all Hungarian organizations responsible for security were “on high alert” and that the Defense Council was essentially meeting around the clock.
In his assessment, the threat to Hungarian infrastructure will persist until the negative decision regarding Russian energy in Europe is reversed and the pre-war status quo is restored, when energy could also be imported into the European Union from the east.
