The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) is setting new standards in the international research landscape. On Thursday, the SPIRIT Olympic Studies Research Center was inaugurated. With this initiative, the institution is solidifying its ambition to become a leading academic center for the Olympic Movement in Central and Eastern Europe.
The name of the new center, SPIRIT, is more than just a catchy term. As Lajos Mocsai, chairman of the board of trustees of the university foundation, explained, the acronym stands for the institution’s core pillars: Sports, Performance, Inclusion, Research, Innovation, and Training. “Sport is based on hard physical work, but the spirit and psychology behind it are indispensable. The work at this center must also serve as a moral guide,” he emphasized.
SPIRIT’s main goal is to systematize the knowledge and values of the Olympic Movement and share them internationally.
In a region with deep-rooted sporting traditions, the center aims to strengthen scientific collaboration and serve as a bridge between sports, science, and society.
Rector Tamás Sterbenz highlighted the importance of close cooperation with the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB). Following last year’s anniversary celebrations—100 years of HUSS and 130 years of MOB—the founding of SPIRIT is the logical next step to further increase the university’s international visibility.
László Fábián, Secretary General of the MOB, underscored the uniqueness of the project.
There are only ten to twelve comparable research centers of this kind worldwide. This underscores the importance of social science research for modern elite sports,”
he explained.
Under the leadership of Nikoletta Sipos-Onyestyák (Chair of Sports Management), the center has defined clear goals:
- Establishing a platform for Olympic studies;
- organizing international conferences and expert forums;
- digitizing Olympic archives to preserve historical knowledge for the future;
- establishing a summer university for students from around the world.
The institution’s motto sums up the core of its mission: “The Olympic Movement is not just a sporting event, but a value system, a social phenomenon, and a field of research.”
With the opening of SPIRIT, Budapest is once again positioning itself as an indispensable player on the global sports map—this time not on the playing field, but in the lecture hall and the laboratory.
