Open political interference: Facebook may be restricting Viktor Orbán’s posts ahead of the elections, Mandiner reported on Wednesday.
Based on the article, Facebook’s intervention raises serious questions about transparency in the handling of political content on social media.
Lebanese-Australian political commentator Mario Nawfall pointed out in an X post that the incident may have been prompted by a call from a member of the TISZA party who, “as a former Meta employee, urged supporters to report Viktor Orbán’s posts en masse.”

Based on the post, Péter Magyar, the chairman of the TISZA Party, has achieved
extremely high engagement metrics that far exceed the global average, despite operating in a smaller country with language barriers.”
Mario Nawfall also pointed out that Péter Magyar “uses a professional profile instead of a political page,” which is not permitted under Meta’s long-standing guidelines on political content, allowing him to potentially circumvent the platform’s rules.

The article also highlights “problems” related to Meta’s moderation practices. It stated that a regional Meta employee had publicly expressed views that “align with content that follows mainstream narratives in Europe, supports Ukraine, and is critical of the Hungarian government.”
According to Mario Nawfall,
serious questions regarding freedom of expression and the integrity of democratic processes”
would arise if Hungary’s most popular social media platform were to continue restricting Viktor Orbán’s content while “artificially inflating” the activity of opposition accounts.
At the end of the post, he emphasized: “I have already witnessed political interference by social media companies in other countries and very much hope that this does not happen in Hungary.”

The Meta executive involved in the alleged restriction of Viktor Orbán’s content has been identified as Oskar Braszczyński, the company’s Government & Social Impact Partner for Central and Eastern Europe. In several documented cases, he has expressed sympathy for the Hungarian opposition movement. Furthermore, his public profile reveals a clear bias in favor of the causes championed by progressive networks.
Following the oil blockade, a “Facebook blockade” could now occur,
as the European Commission has activated the system that allows it to restrict social media content ahead of the elections in Hungary, Csaba Dömötör, a Fidesz-KDNP Member of the European Parliament, announced on Wednesday in Brussels. He explained: “The European Commission is outsourcing the task of content moderation to so-called external civil society actors, all of whom have a progressive orientation. The Hungarian consortium responsible for enforcing content restrictions has received funding from Brussels in recent years amounting to the equivalent of more than one billion forints.”
