In keeping with tradition, a wreath was laid at the statue of Lajos Kossuth at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on Monday to mark the Hungarian national holiday.
State Secretary for Parliamentary and Strategic Affairs Miklós Panyi and Ambassador Szabolcs Takács laid the wreath at the bust of the 19th-century Hungarian statesman.

In his ceremonial speech, the State Secretary drew attention to the parallels between the character of Hungarian freedom fighters and those who fought for American freedom.
He pointed out that many participants in the Hungarian freedom struggles found a home overseas—even after the events of 1848–49—and that, with their “freedom fighter spirit,” they were able to shape and develop the United States.
At the traditional commemoration in Washington, Szabolcs Takács emphasized that Lajos Kossuth is one of only three foreigners honored with a statue in the U.S. Capitol.
Monday’s wreath-laying ceremony concluded the series of March 15 commemorations held in the U.S. capital. The events began last Friday at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with a screening of the film Hungarian Wedding and a festive reception, and continued on Sunday with a ceremony organized by the local Hungarian community at the Kossuth House in Washington.
