The establishment of a new training center for the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education in Vásárosnamény was hailed as another pillar of Hungary’s future by Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, on Tuesday.
The university in Transcarpathia serves as a unifying and sustaining force for Hungarians. However, since the outbreak of war, many young Hungarians have been forced to leave, and “if they were to return now, nothing but war, fighting, and death would await them. What we are doing here is saving a nation,” said the minister.
He added that young people from Transcarpathia living here can obtain a degree at the Transcarpathian Hungarian university’s branch in Vásárosnamény and then return to their homeland to strengthen the Hungarian community there. Their degrees are recognized in both Ukraine and Hungary.
This helps many young people to continue their studies at university level in Hungary, either in Vásárosnamény or at the vocational training center in Mátészalka (both towns are located in eastern Hungary, close to the borders with Ukraine and Romania).
“This way, they can obtain a degree or a vocational qualification in safe environment, whereas if they stayed in Ukraine, they would have to go to war. The distance between Berehove (Beregszász) and Vásárosnamény is 30 kilometers, but this is now also the difference between war and peace. That is why we can talk about saving the nation,” the minister pointed out.
He added that on March 27, the university will celebrate the 350th birthday of its namesake, Ferenc Rákóczi II. It is a tremendous thing that the Beregszász institution, with its approximately 1,600 students and 200 teachers, was able to continue operating as a college during wartime last fall. It is a tremendous achievement that the Berehove (Beregszász) institution, with approximately 1,600 students and 200 teachers, was able to rise from college to university level during wartime last fall. Thanks to the leaders for this, said Balázs Hankó.
