Obuda University has received nearly 390 million forints (997,000 euros) in non-repayable funding under the HU-RIZONT International Research Excellence Cooperation Program to implement the Horizon-X project, the institution announced on Monday.
The goal of the Horizon-X project is to establish a transatlantic research and development collaboration between Rice University (Rice Space Institute) in the United States, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, and the Space Lab at Obuda University. The project intends to accelerate the development of sustainable space technologies for the near-Earth and cis-lunar (around the Moon) economy and missions.
The program builds on the partners’ complementary strengths: autonomous robotics and embedded systems, human-machine collaboration and human spaceflight systems, digital twin-based modeling, and the system-level integration of sustainability,”
the university’s press release states.
They wrote that the project’s main research and development directions include jointly developing a new-generation autonomous lunar rover prototype supported by machine learning and digital twins (a digital model of an intended or actual real-world physical product, system, or process), along with solutions for real-time physiological and cognitive monitoring tailored to spacesuit and EVA workflows. The project also focuses on digital twin–based integrated modeling of cis-lunar systems to optimize resource efficiency and mission resilience.
In addition to technology demonstrations, the program strengthens the long-term transatlantic innovation partnership through international workshops, researcher and student mobility, and a commercialization and IP roadmap, the announcement states.
