Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will travel to Washington in two weeks to meet with Donald Trump again. The occasion is the inaugural meeting of a new international body, the Board of Peace, that could significantly change the geopolitical order.
On the sidelines of a rally of the “Digital Citizens’ Circles” (DPK) in Szombathely, Viktor Orbán announced that he had accepted an invitation from Donald Trump to visit the U.S. capital. The focus of the visit will be the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace.
As Hungary Today has reported, the Peace Council is being promoted by the U.S. as a new international organization whose stated goal is to resolve armed conflicts. The details of the draft are causing a stir. Donald Trump is to head the body – with presidential powers for life.
While the Board of Peace was originally intended to end the Israel-Hamas conflict and rebuild the Gaza Strip, the current statute reads more like a counter-proposal to the United Nations (UN).
According to the White House, 60 countries have been invited, and 35 have already accepted. In addition to Hungary, major players such as Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Argentina are also included. The other UN veto powers (China, Russia, France, UK) have so far stayed away.
In an interview on Friday, Viktor Orbán emphasized the strategic alliance between Budapest and the current U.S. administration in connection with Donald Trump’s declaration of support for his re-election. He sharply criticized the stance of European countries. “If Donald Trump had been president in 2022, there would be no war [in Ukraine],” said the Hungarian head of government. He accused European partners of “sabotaging” the U.S. president’s peace efforts.
Hungary sees itself as a bridgehead in this structure.
We are not the largest country, but we are the only ally of the United States in the cause of peace,”
said Viktor Orbán. This political proximity also pays off economically. While U.S. capital is being withdrawn elsewhere, high-tech investments are flowing into Hungary under Donald Trump, the Hungarian prime minister noted.
Whether the U.S. president will visit Hungary in return remains to be seen. PM Orbán referred to President Trump’s background as a businessman, noting that his strategy is often based on the fact that no one can know exactly what will happen next.
What is certain, however, is that the meeting in Washington in two weeks’ time will be seen as a signal for closer cooperation between the conservative forces in both countries.
