Summer scenes from Tihany in 1965, capturing holidaymakers enjoying Lake Balaton’s vibrant atmosphere
The Balaton Museum in Keszthely is collecting objects and memorabilia for an exhibition entitled Balaton Retro, which will open in June and will be accompanied by an open-air car show.
Sándor Décsey, director of the museum, said at a press conference on Tuesday that the exhibition of retro memorabilia, which will be open to visitors from mid-June, is intended to be the biggest event of the year.
As a community exhibition, the organizers are not only expecting objects, photos, and other memorabilia, but are also collecting stories related to them, because a well-told story can sometimes mean more than an archival document.
Péter Németh, the curator of the exhibition, recalled that they have been organizing smaller and larger community exhibitions for years, which have resulted in a large number of exhibits that have not only enriched the museum’s collection but may also serve as a basis for scientific research in the future.
The exhibition entitled Balatoni retró (Balaton Retro) will be organized in a similar way, thus they are awaiting objects, pictures, and any other memorabilia from the period between the 1960s and the 1990s that can be displayed.
He added that Lake Balaton is a symbol of freedom for many people, not only because of summer vacations, but also as a meeting place for former East and West German tourists.
The exhibition will evoke beach life, restaurants, discos, and, according to their plans, vehicles from the Eastern Bloc from that era will also be displayed in the museum garden. In connection with this, the former garden and drive-in cinemas will also be evoked with open-air screenings of films from the era,”
Péter Németh said.
Regarding the music scene of the time, they are also looking for tape recorders, cassettes, CDs, posters, tickets, newspapers, and clothing, he added.
The curator also mentioned that donations will be accepted until May 31, even if only for the exhibition’s nearly one-year duration, but they can only accept memorabilia if the donors coordinate with the museum in advance.
