Viktor Orbán’s ally, André Ventura, has made it to the second round of the Portuguese presidential election. The Hungarian prime minister congratulated the leader of the Chega party on his Facebook page.
“Congratulations, André Ventura, on making it to the second round of the presidential election. The Portuguese people have sent a clear message: they want more Patriots across Europe. Força na segunda volta!” wrote Viktor Orbán on his social media page.

André Ventura, leader of the right-wing, anti-immigration Chega (Enough) party, will run against socialist candidate António José Seguro in the second round of the Portuguese presidential election. With more than 93 percent of the votes counted, Seguro won the first round with 30 percent of the vote, while Ventura finished second with 24.46 percent.

“It looks like we are going to the second round!” Ventura wrote on X on Sunday evening.
André Ventura was the only candidate who had already run in the last presidential election in 2021. At that time, he received 11.9 percent of the vote, or about 500,000 votes, and finished on the third place.
Since then, according to polls, his party has steadily gained strength and achieved a result of 22.8 percent in the parliamentary elections in May last year, sending 60 deputies to parliament and overtaking the Socialist Party.

The second round will take place on February 8: this is the first time since 1986 that a further round has been necessary.
The Prime Minister’s political director also congratulated him on X and wished him every success in the second round. Balázs Orbán concluded by writing in Portuguese, “Congratulations on your fantastic result. Keep up the good work, patriots!”

Miklós Szánthó, Director General of the Center for Fundamental Rights, congratulated “our CPAC Hungary veteran on his success” on X. “The Portuguese people have sent a clear message that patriots are on the rise across Europe,” the director said.
