The Hungarian government gives priority support to competitive sports, but proportionally much more goes to supporting children’s sports, said Ádám Schmidt, State Secretary for Sports, on Monday on National Sports Radio.
In his traditional interview at the beginning of the month, the sports leader emphasized the topic of state funding for sports and refuted criticism that the Hungarian government only provides funding for professional sports.
“Many people try to distort the picture, saying that it is only about competitive sports, only about spectacle, only about the highest level of sport. Well, that is far from the truth. In fact, my figures show that the government does support competitive sports, but to a much greater extent it helps parents in their daily lives,” emphasized the state secretary, who pointed out that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán considers it one of the greatest forms of family support that young people can participate in sports at very affordable prices in the country.
This is a level of support for families that many people do not understand because it has become natural over the past 15 years,”
he said.
Ádám Schmidt emphasized that Hungarian young people can participate in sports under excellent conditions, with high-quality equipment and under the guidance of serious sports professionals, and thanks to state support, parents have to pay very little for all this.
“I can say with confidence that the monthly membership fees of ten to fifteen thousand forints payable to the associations are negligible in international terms,” said the sports leader, noting that the same is true when comparing sports membership fees to the cost of other leisure activities or private lessons.
