The expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant has reached a decisive moment, and the spectacular part of the work will ramp up in the coming period so that Hungary’s largest ever investment can be completed on time. Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, made the announcement on Tuesday at the site.
The Deputy Minister first emphasized that all political, legal, licensing, financial, and technical obstacles that had long hindered the progress of the project amid the geopolitical confrontation and sanctions that had dominated recent years had now been removed.
All of that is now in the past. We have managed to get the project back on track, and there is no turning back from here. The decisive moment will come on February 5, when the first concrete is poured, making this investment irreversible in a physical sense as well,”
he said.

He also reported that preparations for this decisive moment are currently underway in Paks, with the pouring of the so-called assembly concrete layer to create a smooth, clean, uniform surface for further construction.
“…the foundation of the nuclear power plant will begin in February. From this point on, there is no turning back; this power plant will be built according to schedule and in accordance with our obligations,” he confirmed.
Levente Magyar recalled that the international environment has not been favorable for Russian-Western cooperation in recent years, to put it mildly. However, as he pointed out, this is a genuine international project involving American, French, German, and even Australian companies alongside the Russian main contractor. “In Hungary, nuclear power plants can produce large amounts of energy safely, in a climate-neutral way, and at low cost,” he emphasized.
“This is why Hungary has decided to more than double the capacity of its nuclear power plant, and we have now reached a stage in this process that will bring about a spectacular acceleration of work and convince everyone that Hungary’s largest ever investment will be completed on time,” he concluded.
