Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Prime Minister of the Sultanate of Brunei and Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary
The President of Hungary received the Sultan of Brunei in his office on Tuesday, presenting him with a Hungarian state award.
The monarch arrived in Hungary by the invitation of President Tamás Sulyok, and the occasion marks the first official visit of Hassanal Bolkiah to Hungary.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei was welcomed with military honors at Kossuth Square, after which the parties continued their discussions at the Sándor Palace.
Tamás Sulyok and Haji Hassanal Bolkiah first held a private meeting, followed by a plenary session.
After the meeting, at the recommendation of the Prime Minister, the Hungarian Head of State awarded the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit with Collar and Gold Star to Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, in recognition of his dedicated efforts to develop diplomatic, economic, and educational relations between Hungary and Brunei.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also received Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Prime Minister of the Sultanate of Brunei, in the Carmelite monastery on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s Office Communications Department announced.
Following the meeting the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote on his X page:
“Honoured to welcome His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei to Budapest. Strengthening our friendship and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.“
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also met the monarch of Brunei, and following the meeting he shared a video on his Facebook page, captioned:
“It is worth keeping an eye on Southeast Asia”
This comment suggests that perhaps the region could be a potential partner in various fields of cooperation in the foreseeable future.
With the arrival of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, one of the world’s most expensive private jets landed in Hungary. The Boeing 747, including modifications, may have cost around 100-115 billion forints (261-300 million euros).
