The much anticipated meeting between U.S. president Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has just taken place at the White House. The Hungarian leader has been given a cordial welcome by President Trump, a sign of the what Mr. Orbán called the “golden age of U.S.-Hungarian relations.”
As the two politicians were entering the White House together, the U.S. president turned to members of the media pointing at his guest saying, “a great leader.”

PM Orbán has called on the President to make peace efforts concerning Ukraine a priority of American-Hungarian relations. Donald Trump has in turn highlighted immigration as one of the leading topics of the discussions. He said that the Hungarian government has not made a mistake in terms of handling illegal migration, while Europe has mishandled the issue. For this “I like and respect him”, the President said referring to Mr. Orbán. Hungary is a country that is lead properly, therefore Mr. Orbán is going to be successful at the next national elections (in April 2026), predicted the U.S. president.
We are the only government in the European Union that is a Christian government, all others are liberal, replied Mr. Orbán. We are kind of a special island of difference in a liberal ocean in Europe, he added.

As to the war in Ukraine, the President disclosed that Viktor Orbán feels that the war is going to end in the near future. On his part, PM Orbán praised his U.S. counterpart for the American lead peace efforts, while added that Brussels, in other words, the European Union bureaucracy, have a different approach to the war. Yet the only pro-peace governments are the U.S. and “small Hungary”. All the others in Europe believe that Ukraine can win on the battlefield, the Hungarian Prime Minister claimed.

EU should respect Hungary because their government was right on immigration, continued the U.S. president. In Europe crime rates are up, while in Hungary they remain very low. Europe respects Viktor Orbán a lot, although they may not like him. They are flooding Europe with immigration, “and I am telling them to stop because they might not have a Europe soon”, President Trump warned. At which point PM Orbán has reminded journalists that the Hungarian government is obliged to pay 1 million euros a day as a penalty because they do not let illegal migrants into the country.

“I told European leaders to respect this man”, said President Trump. The EU countries must stop and reverse migration, just as the current administration is doing in the U.S. Americans are currently getting foreign criminals out, while Hungary does not even have that problem.
I stick with Orbán. Many are jealous of him because he does not have the problems they have”,
he added.
At this point during the press conference PM Orbán emphasized that he did not come to Washington to ask Donald Trump to manage his conflicts with other EU leaders. “I am here to create the golden age between our countries”, he told reporters.
Asked about the reasons for cancelling the Budapest Peace Summit between him and Vladimir Putin, he simply replied that “the Russians do not want to stop yet”. In his interpretations that is the main issue that thwarted the Budapest Summit. “I inherited the war and we will stop it in the near future”, President Trump emphasized.

Viktor Orbán has voiced his agreement with President Trump saying that in his view the war in Ukraine would not have happened if Donald Trump was president in 2022. He also though that European leaders were taking such a hard line on arming Ukraine because they were encouraged to do so by the Biden White House. But President Trump unequivocally reiterated that
should the peace summit between him and President Putin take place in the future, he still prefers Budapest as the location.
