Hungarian students from the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education (located in western Ukraine) who were taken away for conscription have been released in Ukraine, but this latest incident once again draws attention to the importance of peace, wrote Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Facebook on Wednesday.
The minister said that the government had been closely monitoring the case of Hungarian students from the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education who were taken away for conscription throughout the day. The university students were detained at the Beregszász District Military Recruitment Command, despite having valid deferrals due to their studies.
We were in constant contact with the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia and the university’s leaders, as Ukrainian law is clear on this point: these students are exempt from conscription,”
he emphasized.
“By evening, the Ukrainian authorities had finally released all the students, which is good news, but it also draws attention once again to the importance of peace. The sooner there is peace, the sooner the violent conscription will end,” he continued.
“We Hungarians stand for peace, we support peace efforts, and we will do the same tomorrow in Washington,” he concluded.
