Trieste, Italy
Hungary’s seaport in Trieste is being built according to plan, meaning that everything is in place for the facility to begin operating at partial capacity first, then at full capacity within a few years, announced Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on site on Friday.
Levente Magyar stated that they last inspected the work in the spring, when construction of the seawall began, and since then it has been clear how much progress has been made.
“We are now standing on soil that has been filled in since we were last here. This means that a several hundred-meter section of the embankment is being filled in, effectively reclaiming it from the sea, and this section of the embankment is being reinforced with huge piles that will be driven into the seabed,” he said.
This will hold the embankment, which will have to be secured from the side with 35-meter anchors in order for the embankment section to withstand the enormous load that the loading of Hungarian export goods will represent here,”
he continued.
“This means that this long section of the quay wall must be able to bear a weight of six tons per square meter. The structural work is currently underway and will be completed around August-September next year,” he added.
Magyar emphasized that, in parallel with this, the Hungarian Government will begin planning the internal area within the embankment section, where goods will be handled, loaded, and stored in the coming months.
“By around 2028, we will be able to partially start operating the port, but there is still a lot of work to be done before then. However, everyone can see that we are serious about this whole project, as work is proceeding at full speed, with dozens of workers building the quay and dredging the seabed on the ship behind me,” he emphasized.
“So everything is in place for Hungary’s seaport to begin operating at partial capacity first, and then at full capacity within a few years, as planned,” he concluded.
