Eight Hungarian citizens were among the victims of a small aircraft crash on Tuesday in Kwale County, on Kenya’s coast. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the Hungarians who died in the plane crash. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó contacted the Kenyan authorities, and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are assisting the affected families in every possible way, the Prime Minister said in a social media post.
The Cessna Caravan aircraft departed from Diani Airport in Ukunda, heading to Kichwa Tembo in the Maasai Mara National Park, a popular tourist destination, but shortly after takeoff — about 40 kilometers from the airport, in a forested area — it crashed and caught fire. According to the authorities, only the burnt wreckage was found at the site. Stephen Orinde, police commander of Kwale County, said the accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. local time, when there was heavy rain in the area.

There were no survivors, the Mombasa Air Safari airline operating the aircraft announced. The airline also stated that the pilot did not make contact after takeoff, and it took ground control 30 minutes to locate the plane. John Cleave, director of Mombasa Air Safari, emphasized in a statement that they are doing their best to provide full support to the victims’ families.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed his sincere condolences on behalf of the government to the relatives of the deceased Hungarian citizens and stated that they will provide every possible assistance in this difficult situation. Twelve people died in the crash, including eight Hungarian citizens—members of two families and one of their acquaintances.
Sadly, two minors are among the victims. The identification process is ongoing, and once we receive the official information regarding the victims’ identities, the families will, of course, be notified. We will assist the relatives of the victims in every possible way,”
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade quoted him as saying.

“I have just spoken with my colleague Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. I thanked him for the measures taken so far and requested his assistance to ensure that the upcoming procedures are as quick and smooth as possible,” he continued.

he said.
Hungary’s President, Tamás Sulyok, also reacted to the tragedy. “I was deeply saddened to learn about the plane crash in Kenya,” he wrote on X. “I am praying for those who lost their lives in the tragedy, extend my heartfelt sympathies to their families, and wish them strength to cope with their tragic loss,” he added.
