The Hungarian section of the joint Hungarian-Serbian oil pipeline will definitely be completed by the end of 2027, which will represent a significant step forward in terms of energy security for Hungary and the entire region, announced Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Monday in Budapest.
Following talks with Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Dedovic, Péter Szijjártó stated that there had been a lot of worrying news recently regarding energy supplies in Central Europe, as Ukraine had repeatedly attacked oil pipelines in Russia that supply Hungary and Slovakia and had previously shut down a natural gas pipeline that was also of critical importance.
These Ukrainian attempts to restrict energy supplies have increased the importance of Hungarian-Serbian strategic energy cooperation,”
he emphasized.

He then pointed out that, in light of recent events, the two countries have agreed to pursue even closer energy cooperation than before in order to further improve the energy security of Hungary, Serbia, and the entire Central European region.
Péter Szijjártó called it positive news that a record amount of natural gas is arriving in Hungary via Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline, now amounting to approximately 21 million cubic meters per day.
As a result, the day before yesterday we exceeded five billion cubic meters of deliveries since the beginning of the year. This means that a new record will be set by the end of this year. Never before has so much natural gas arrived in Hungary via the TurkStream pipeline in a single year as it will this year,”
he noted.
“On the one hand, this ensures the security of our energy supply, and on the other hand, it ensures the possibility of maintaining low utility prices, meaning that we can maintain the achievements of utility price reductions with the large volume of natural gas arriving via Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline,” he added.
The minister also mentioned that he and his colleague had reviewed the status of the joint oil pipeline construction and, in light of the latest developments in Ukraine, had agreed to accelerate the work.
“In Hungary, MOL will soon complete the first phase of preparatory work, and licensing and environmental preparation are underway. The Hungarian section of this oil pipeline will be 190 kilometers long. We will try to build alongside existing pipelines in as many places and over as long a distance as possible to make this process as simple as possible in terms of licensing and technical considerations,” he said.
He explained that the Hungarian section of the pipeline will definitely be completed by the end of 2027, and pointed out that the more energy transport routes are created, the more secure the region’s supply will be.
“In light of the regional events of recent weeks and months, Hungarian-Serbian energy cooperation has perhaps never been as important as it is now, and we have agreed to make it even closer and more strategic,” he concluded.
