President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen
Minister Péter Szijjártó stated at a press conference following the informal meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council that it had once again become clear that Brussels and a significant number of member states were preparing for a long-term continuation of the war in Ukraine and were not interested in the success of the peace process.
“Brussels and the majority of EU member states want to spend tens of billions of euros from the pockets of European citizens on paying Ukrainian soldiers, buying drones and running the Ukrainian state,” he said.
“In Copenhagen, they treated it as a definition that Ukraine must be supported financially, and since there is no agreement on whether frozen Russian assets should be used to cover this, it is clear that either Ukraine’s own budget or the national or European Union budgets could be used to finance Ukraine,” he continued.
He then emphasized that there was still great pressure on the Hungarian government to allow Ukraine to join the EU on a fast track and to accept new sanctions against Russia, this time in the energy sector as well.
“There was a lot of pressure to pay out more than EUR 6 billion, or HUF 2,400 billion, from the European Peace Facility (EPF) to arm Ukraine, and there was a lot of pressure to send even more money and even more weapons to the Ukrainians,” he emphasized.
At today’s EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Copenhagen it became clear that Brussels and most member states are preparing for a long war, not peace. They want to send tens of billions of euros to Ukraine for soldiers’ salaries, drones, weapons, and the operation of the Ukrainian…

Péter Szijjártó complained that at the current meeting, the European Commission “actually acted as a Ukrainian Commission, representing Ukraine’s interests completely, as opposed to the interests of the member states.”
Today, it also became clear that Brussels does not care about the fate of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia (Ukraine- ed. note). If the European Union really wanted to help, it could easily restore the situation that existed in 2015, when Hungarians in Transcarpathia still had full rights to use their mother tongue in education, culture, and public administration,”
he said.
“But Brussels does not care about the Hungarians in Transcarpathia and does not want to help. They could, though, just as when President Zelenskyy rewrote the anti-corruption rules in Ukraine and placed anti-corruption organizations under his own authority, the European Commission immediately took action and had this law repealed,” he recalled.
“If they wanted to, they could just as easily have the laws that take away the rights of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia repealed, but they don’t want to. The Commissioner for Enlargement made it clear that the reason for this difference is that anti-corruption rules are more important to them than the fate of the Hungarian minority,” he added.
He also emphasized that it has become clear that Brussels does not care about Hungarian energy security, about whether Hungarian families and the Hungarian economy can be provided with adequate energy sources.
According to the minister, this is evident from the fact that they have not yet responded to the letter from the Hungarian and Slovak governments calling on the European Commission to at least comply with its own decision and take action against Ukraine, which is threatening the energy security of EU member states.
Finally, he stated that the government would defend our country and our economy against all this pressure and protect the Hungarian people from the negative effects of war.
Together with Slovak FM Juraj Blanár, we sent a letter to HRVP @kajakallas and Energy Commissioner @DanJoergensen demanding that the @EU_Commission finally act against Ukraine’s repeated attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline.

He explained that this meant four things. First, they would give their full support to US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts, as only an agreement between the US and Russia could bring about a settlement.
Secondly, they will not allow Ukraine to be pushed into the EU, as this would ruin Hungarian farmers and Hungarian food security, and would allow the Ukrainian mafia into Hungary. “Therefore, we will not allow the substantive part of the accession negotiations, i.e. the specific negotiation chapters, to be opened,” he said.
“Thirdly, we will not allow (…) Hungarian people’s money to be used to arm and finance the Ukrainian army” he said.
“And finally, fourthly, we will not allow Brussels and Kyiv to jointly jeopardize Hungary’s energy security. We will not allow utility costs to be raised in Hungary, so we will not support sanctions proposals that target energy companies that are important to Hungary’s energy supply,” he added.
