Hungary has signed an agreement with China that represents significant potential for cooperation between the two countries in the fields of nuclear energy, security, and innovation, announced Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Monday in Vienna.
The minister emphasized that it is in Hungary’s national interest to revive civilized cooperation between East and West, and that our country has a good chance to prove that nuclear energy can be the basis for this.
“What is happening in Hungary? Based on decades of good cooperation and a contract signed in 2014, the Russian giant Rosatom is building a nuclear power plant with major French and German suppliers. In addition, we have signed an exclusive agreement on the use of American technology in the field of small nuclear reactors,” he pointed out.
So, the Russian, American, German, and French nuclear industries are all present in Hungary at the same time, and they can work together and with each other really well. With this, Hungary is proving that nuclear energy is one of the best areas for reviving civilized East-West cooperation,”
he added.
Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the next decade will clearly be the decade of nuclear energy, because global demand for electricity is growing dramatically, and only nuclear energy can meet this demand in such large quantities in an efficient, reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly manner.
There are huge players in the nuclear industry in both the East and the West (…) We are cooperating in both directions,”
he said.
In this regard, the minister also announced that he and Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, had agreed to accelerate the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant, as all the necessary conditions are now in place.
