Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár made a key announcement regarding the long-anticipated upgrade of Hungary’s M1 motorway. Responding to a viewer’s question, the minister revealed that the launch of the six-lane expansion project will start on September 15.
As part of the M1 development, the expansion work—managed by the Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. (MKIF)—has already been underway in the form of preparatory tasks for nearly three-quarters of a year, writes Világgazdaság.
Currently, temporary acceleration lanes are being built to assist traffic merging onto the motorway. In the first phase, such access ramps will be constructed at six key interchanges: Concó, Tatabánya, Óbarok, Bicske, Herceghalom, and Sasfészek-tó rest area (northern Hungary).
Recycled asphalt from previous resurfacing work is being reused for these temporary routes.
The full-scale expansion, starting on September 15, will cover the section between the M0 ring road and the Concó rest area near Ács and Bábolna (close to the Slovakia border). Along this stretch, the motorway’s pavement will be upgraded and widened to six lanes—three in each direction—plus an additional Intelligent Lane (ITS), designed to function as a smart shoulder lane,
as it was previously reported by Világgazdaság.
Two key developments are taking place on the M1 motorway simultaneously, as the preparatory work that does not affect the main roadway has begun as early as autumn 2024, and as of this summer, preparatory activities on the main roadway itself are also set to begin— representing the final steps before full-scale construction, including work on the central median.
In a separate announcement, Lázár also disclosed that significant road development projects are expected across all counties in the coming months. Acknowledging delays and shortcomings in the condition of major national roads, the minister promised a turnaround. According to Lázár, over the next six months, road reconstruction works worth HUF 100 billion (cc. EUR 250 million) could begin across Hungary.
