On the occasion of International Dog Day (August 26), the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) released fresh data on trends in dog ownership. As of 2024, a total of 878,500 four-legged friends were registered in Hungary, meaning that this many dogs were vaccinated against rabies, kept domestically, and not intended for export.
Based on data from Nébih (National Food Chain Safety Office), the KSH infographic shows that most dogs were mixed breeds, numbering 281,500. Among purebred dogs, the following were the most common:
- Dachshund – 83,100
- German Shepherd – 44,500
- Yorkshire Terrier – 32,400
- Labrador Retriever – 24,400
- French Bulldog – 24,100

Among Hungarian dog breeds, the Puli (23,700) and the Vizsla (20,200) are the most common, but there are also significant numbers of Mudi (6,900), Kuvasz (5,700), Komondor (4,300), and Pumi (2,400) dogs, as well as a smaller proportion of Hungarian Greyhounds (1,000) and Transylvanian Hounds (800) in Hungarian households.

The statistics cover not only breeds but also dog names. Among dogs born in 2024, Luna (1,006) was the most common name, followed by Molly (905) and Bella (873). Lili (496) and Csoki (476) followed in the popularity ranking. Looking at the data for the past five years, Bella (10,200) tops the list, closely followed by Molly (9,700) and Luna (8,000), with Lili (5,800) and Maci (5,400) rounding out the top five.
