Blanka Vas claimed victory in the final stage of the Tour de Romandie on Sunday, delivering a powerful performance in the challenging Swiss road race.
The 122.1-kilometer stage, which started and finished in Aigle, featured five categorized climbs. The Hungarian rider, who finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, stayed with the peloton for much of the race before launching a decisive move just over four kilometers from the finish. With a fearless descent, she caught up to the leading breakaway duo and set herself up for a dramatic finale.
In the final sprint, Vas outpaced Spain’s Paula Blasi and Switzerland’s Elise Chabbey — the latter securing the overall race victory — with a burst of speed neither could match. Riding for Team SD Worx, the 23-year-old crossed the line first in a time of 3:11:35.
Vas finished 42nd overall in the three-day World Tour race, 22 minutes and 43 seconds behind the general classification leader. The win marks a significant milestone, coming almost exactly one year after her previous World Tour triumph — a stage victory in last year’s Tour de France on August 15.
“Blanka Vas was amazing today. She was phenomenal on the climb, cresting with only a few seconds to make up, and then she showed unbelievable downhill skills to close that gap to the two girls in front. We knew this stage could be one for Blanka, but the way she finished it — crazy! It didn’t come out of the blue, either. When we arrived in Switzerland we only reconned this last stage because we knew our best chance would be today, and that paid off.”
commented DS Gianpaolo Mondini.
