“Ukraine will be in the European Union with or without Orbán,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed in a video posted by the Ukrainian portal MilitaryNewsUA on social media on Monday. The Hungarian Prime Minister did not leave the statement unanswered. No country has ever blackmailed its way into the European Union – and that will not happen now either, he declared.
In the video posted on X, the Ukrainian head of state stated that EU accession is the choice of the Ukrainian people. He added that he is confident that the majority of Hungarians support Ukraine’s EU membership and that Hungary’s Prime Minister is the only one slowing down the process, but this process is irreversible.
“It is simply unfair to tell stories about Ukraine. And this is being done today by one person who thinks he has influence. Only time has influence. (…) Only history will remember that Hungary, namely the only Prime Minister who slowed down Ukraine’s accession to the EU, was him, this very person. Therefore, either change the procedure, and then we will certainly turn to the Netherlands, and not only to the Netherlands, because this is also a matter of supporting this.
Or we follow the usual procedure, and all countries should put pressure on the Prime Minister of Hungary.”

“It turns out that Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to decide what is best for Hungarians,” Viktor Orbán wrote on Facebook in response to the Ukrainian President’s statements.
He is once again using his well-known tactic: moral blackmail to try to get a country to support his war efforts. Dear Mr. President! With all due respect, Hungary has no moral obligation to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU. No country has ever blackmailed its way into the European Union, and that is not going to happen now either,”
Orbán stated.
“The EU Treaty is clear: membership is decided by the Member States, unanimously. The Hungarian people have already made their decision. The overwhelming majority said no to Ukraine’s EU membership in the VOKS2025 referendum.
If President Zelenskyy wants to change this, the media campaign against Hungary is probably not the best way to make friends,”
added the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, also responded to the Ukrainian President’s statements:
Deciding which country is ready to join the EU and can actually become a member is not up to the President of Ukraine. It is up to the EU, where such decisions require unanimity.
The Hungarian people have already made their decision, and we represent their will in Brussels,” the Minister wrote on X.
