Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, spoke on the phone with his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanár, expressing Hungary’s sympathy regarding the train accident in Rožňava (Rozsnyó) and offering the assistance of the Hungarian National Ambulance Service.
Two passenger trains collided on Monday in Slovakia, near Jablonov nad Turnou (Szádalmás), close to Rožňava, a few kilometers from the Hungarian border. Slovak Minister of Health Kamil Sasko said at a press conference that paramedics treated 91 people at the scene. Seven of them are seriously injured and in critical condition, 14 others are moderately injured, and 70 have minor injuries.
According to the Slovak authorities, based on current information, no Hungarians were involved in the train accident, and no requests for assistance have been received by the consular service in this matter.
The Hungarian consul is continuously monitoring events, liaising with the relevant Slovak authorities and ready to provide any assistance to Hungarian citizens if necessary, said Minister Szijjártó.
The trains collided shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday in front of a tunnel, on a section of track that narrows from two tracks to one, the Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) informed the media. The cause of the accident is not yet clear. After the collision, one train remained on the tracks while the other derailed.
