ELTE University
Due to Islamist and anti-Israel provocateurs, Alexander Yakobson, left-wing academic and historian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was unable to give his lecture in one of the classrooms at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Faculty of Liberal Arts (Bölcsészettudományi Kar- BTK).
Alexander Yakobson was scheduled to give his lecture in English on October 16 at ELTE BTK. This would have been the first part of a three-part course entitled “Diversity and Democracy in Israeli Society,” hirado.hu reported.
An eyewitness told the newspaper that about 20 people were interested in attending the lecture, including five people wearing Palestinian scarves. Tamás BÃró from the Hebrew Studies Department at ELTE welcomed the attendees and then gave the floor to the Israeli professor, who was unable to begin his lecture because
the minority wearing Palestinian scarves began to shout.
A particularly aggressive girl shouted in English that she will not allow “political propaganda” to be spread at the university “in support of genocide.”
The professor tried to steer the commotion toward a discussion, but could not achieve that. The organizers were unable to persuade the troublemakers to leave, and security guards were also unable to influence them. The organizers then asked the dean’s office for guidance on whether they could request official intervention, to which they received the response that
if they were unable to resolve the situation on their own, they should suspend the lecture, which, in the end, did happen.
Since the incident, the university has published a formal announcement, where it stated that “the rector of Eötvös Loránd University ordered an immediate investigation into the matter and initiated proceedings to hold those responsible for the disturbance accountable as soon as possible.”
Fact
Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has consistently been ranked as the best university in Hungary and is among the top universities in Europe. For a few years now, however, ELTE has been accused of pandering to global left-wing ideologies and has also been called detrimental to the education of younger generations, similarly to the George Soros’ Central European University (CEU). Past controversies have also surfaced, including claims that right-leaning professors were allegedly dismissed from their positions while their left-leaning counterparts involved in the same scandal faced no repercussions.According to some reports, the course will now be held online. Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s political director, also responded to the events.
“I did not plan to go, but if there is another lecture, I will go. The university must be prepared for these situations and help lecturers ensure that academic freedom prevails over violence. There is no place for exclusion at the university!” Balázs Orbán emphasized on his social media page.
