One of the most iconic and widely produced steam locomotives in Hungarian railway history has been restored in Debrecen (eastern Hungary). The locomotive, built in 1885, and in service until 1979, is now preserved as a historical exhibit at Debrecen railway station.
The 140-year-old steam engine No. 326.136, a familiar landmark at the station, underwent a conservation-focused renovation through a joint effort between the Hungarian Museum for Science, Technology and Transport (MMKM) and the MÁV Group, according to a statement sent to MTI on Thursday.
The locomotive belongs to the 326 series, developed by Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) in response to increasing freight traffic in the late 1880s. Between 1882 and 1898, a total of 497 units were produced, making the series one of Hungary’s most enduring steam locomotive types.
Although initially designed for hauling freight, the locomotives were also used on steep mountain lines for passenger service. By the early 20th century, 326-series engines had become the go-to locomotives for shunting operations at major railway stations across the country, the museum noted.
After being retired from service in 1979, the locomotive was added to the Transport Museum’s collection and displayed the same year as a “sculptural locomotive” — a non-operational monument.
The last preservation work on the locomotive was carried out in 2011. More than a decade later, it has now undergone anti-corrosion treatment and professional repainting, giving the historic vehicle a renewed, dignified appearance. A new information plaque has also been installed, detailing the locomotive’s history and technical specifications.
The Hungarian Museum for Science, Technology and Transport currently maintains over 30 sculptural locomotives displayed at railway stations across Hungary. These exhibits serve both as historical landmarks and symbols of local railway heritage. The museum emphasized that collecting, preserving, and showcasing these relics remain a key part of its mission.
The freshly restored locomotive was formally unveiled and handed over at Debrecen railway station on Wednesday.
