Siófok
Siófok (capital of Lake Balaton’s southern shore) once again emerged as the most popular domestic travel destination in Hungary this summer, confirms data from booking platform Szallas.hu. As in previous years, one-third of all reservations were made for the Lake Balaton region.
The platform’s report revealed that short stays dominated travel trends. One- and two-night bookings made up 28% and 30% respectively, while 20% of travelers opted for three-night getaways. Just 2% chose stays of a week or longer.
Among accommodation types, apartments were most in demand (32%), followed by hotels (27%), guesthouses (22%), and bed-and-breakfasts (13%).
In terms of spending, 80% of domestic summer bookings cost under HUF 170,000 (approx. €440, Exchange rate: HUF 393 = €1). Nearly half (47%) came in below HUF 70,000, and 34% were in the HUF 70,000–170,000 range. Higher-end bookings — above HUF 270,000 — accounted for only 7%.

The SZÉP Card, Hungary’s tax-free employee benefit for leisure expenses, was used in 27% of online payments on the site.
Other cities in the top 10 included Budapest (2nd), Eger (3rd), Balatonfüred, Gyula, Hajdúszoboszló, Szeged, Hévíz, Pécs, and Nyíregyháza. Regionally, the Balaton area led with 31%, followed by Northern Hungary (16%) and the Southern Great Plain (11%).
Travelers in pairs made up the largest share of bookings (44%), followed by families with children (35%). Couples favored hotels (30%), while families preferred apartments (40%). While Siófok remained top for most travelers, Gyula and Hajdúszoboszló (eastern Hungary) were more popular among families.
Looking ahead, early September booking data shows Budapest leading autumn travel interest, followed by Eger, Siófok, Gyula, and Szeged. In contrast to summer, hotel bookings now outpace apartment stays, and 58% of bookings are from couples.
