Caritas Hungary donated three hundred school supplies packages to disadvantaged children in Transcarpathia. Twenty-two students from Perényi Zsigmond Secondary School received their school bags and necessary school supplies in person on Monday in Vynohradiv, Ukraine (Nagyszőlős). The remaining packages will be delivered by St. Martin Caritas staff to other recipients in various Hungarian-speaking communities in Transcarpathia over the next few days.
The aid organization noted that the back-to-school campaign is part of their aid program called “Let Us Make School Start Joyful!” which provides assistance to thousands of needy students in Hungary each year. The organization considers it particularly important to support children living in Hungarian communities across the border during these difficult times, they wrote.
They quoted Mónika Nyibilevics, the school’s principal, who emphasized: “We thank the mother country for standing by us and supporting us during this turbulent period.” She added: “As long as the love of the Guardian works through you, we teachers and parents will have the strength to stand our ground. And we are confident that the Hungarian community in Nagyszőlős does indeed have a future here, in their homeland.”
Richárd Zagyva, national director of Caritas Hungary, said that
the school supplies package does not solve all the difficulties, but it is an expression that the Hungarians of Transcarpathia are not alone; there is hope, and there are those who care about them.
He said that the organization wants to help not only with a one-time donation, but with a long-term presence and support.
Ferenc Fehér, director of the St. Martin Caritas in Transcarpathia, said that they are supporting children with school bags and school supplies and will continue the program in other settlements as well.
The Caritas Hungary charity campaign, launched at the end of July under the slogan “Let Us Make School Start Joyful!” has already helped over 1,500 children in need with school supplies and vouchers. The goal is to reach at least 3,000 by the end of September.
The initiative not only supports the start of the school year, but also helps children in Hungary with talent development programs and scholarship-type support, reads the statement.
