Saint Stephen’s Day, the nation’s most significant holiday, was celebrated with a full day of solemn ceremonies, cultural festivities, and a magnificent fireworks display lighting up the Budapest skyline on August 20.
During the day, the Hungarian Defense Forces delivered a series of uplifting and visually striking programs across Budapest. The day began at Kossuth Square, where the national flag was raised, and newly commissioned military officers took their oath. As reported by Hungary Today, highlights of the day included an aerial parade over the capital, dynamic military demonstrations, and performances by military bands.

During the afternoon, a solemn mass was held in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, followed by a procession with the Holy Right Hand (the mummified right hand of St. Stephen).

The highlight of the celebration came at 9 p.m., when a spectacular drone show, light painting, laser show, and huge fireworks display were held. According to Zoltán Kovács, State Secretary for International Communications and Relations, yesterday’s fireworks display was the largest in Europe.

The half-hour show was a masterpiece of choreography, with 45,530 individual pyrotechnic effects synchronized and set off from 500 different launch points along the river. It was an unforgettable experience that captivated visitors from all over the world. According to the government’s Facebook page, hundreds of thousands celebrated the founding of the state across the country.
